H. A. Evans was a Freedman's Bureau agent who lived with Martha Schofield and other northerners on Wadmalaw Island during her first year teaching in South Carolina. Discusses Schofield's health. Praises her "high idea of life" and desire to do good. Discusses Christian theology. Praises her school in Aiken; says it will be her legacy. Discusses his belief in the equality of men and women; advocates women's suffrage as a means to abolish slavery and other injustices. Describes his own activities.
